The family business in a short portrait: The history and the people
The vinery Hoffmann-Simon has it's roots in the marriage of the agricultural machines dealer Carl Hoffmann from Piesport to the vintner Maria Simon from Maring. After the war their son Erwin took over the vinery, along with his wife Irmine. Irmine is a member of the traditional vintner family Regnery from Klüsserath.
Together they built up the business, especially since the 1970s, into a firm continuously successful in direct marketing of bottled wine.
The main focus in this, clearly, has always been on the fine-fruity classic Mosel-Riesling-style with a more or less unobtrusive level of residual sugar.
Full-bodied-ness, harmony, lively acidity and a remarkable ability for a positive ripening process on the bottle play and have always played a central role with Hoffmann-Simon wines.
1994 son Dieter Hoffmann joined the business full time and took charge of the cellar and the lead of the work in the vineyards. Previously he studied in Geisenheim, Germany, earning "Dipl. Ing. für Weinbau und Önologie" and absolved several apprenticeships. With him on board, all the requirements of enlarging and further developing the business were met. Beside the care of the fruity white wines more and more dry wines were added. Here special care is taken to achieve a balanced, ripe and easily digestible acidity.
Also added were Red wine, Rose and premium Riesling- sparkling wines in the traditional bottle-fermentation (champagne-method)
In 1999 Dieter Hoffmann became the owner of the business.
In 2000 Dieter married the Chemist Andrea Marmann (she is specialized not in wine-chemistry, but in metal surfacing and works in the steel business). 2001 Sebastian was born and then Johannes in 2004.
In 2006, father Erwin, surprisingly and to everyone's shock, passed away.
Meanwhile the Estate can account for a multitude of successes and awards with wine contests, awards and in wine related literature (see below).
Currently the estate runs 9 hectares of vineyards in a total of six different aerials. As for the plants, for white wine only the traditional Mosel-grapes are grown, the top type "Riesling" on approximately 6.5 hectares and the marvelous "Müller-Thurgau" on 2 hectares. The red type "Regent" with 0.5 hectares is mainly for complementary use.
We take pride in a very differentiated and extensive product line, so we can offer an exciting and broad selection for the individual tastes and likes of our customers.
A wine tasting in our one-of-a-kind and atmospherically historical house built in the 16th century lends the opportunity to get to know the extraordinarily large variety of Mosel-Rieslings.
These wine tastings are especially interesting and informative, because, unlike common in the wide (often industrial) world of wine, all information is coming from first hand experiences and knowledge. There aren't many regions in the world where it is common that the owner of the business is at the same time the worker in the vineyard, the cellar master and the marketer, all in one, who is able to relate his wine philosophy in an integrated context during a wine tasting.
The vinery Hoffmann-Simon invites you, right here in beautiful Piesport, to learn more while tasting our vines.
